I felt badly for Jon Page as he was not given much of a diagnosis by the doctors on Disease Detectives. Surely the neurologists are familiar with the research of Dr. Marios Hadjivassiliou (a fellow neurologist) in the United Kingdom who has discovered many connections between gluten and neurological illnesses, such as gluten ataxia. Although Mr. Page may not have celiac disease (the Gold Standard of “flattened villi upon endoscopy,” positive blood tests for celiac), chronic diarrhea certainly indicates a problem with gluten, and circulating antibodies to gliadin (Antigliadin IgG antibodies) would show gluten intolerance. Were any malabsorption tests run (fat in stool, lactulose-to-mannitol)? Has no one read Dr. Alessio Fasano’s research regarding intestinal permeability caused by gliadin/gluten, which can trigger any number of autoimmune diseases?
